Fictional

Proposal

The proposal I’ve done for this fictional project is effective at getting across the idea as well as some of the possible issues involved and how they will be overcome although to a professional standard the next time I do a proposal it needs to be officially referenced in the bibliography section and be more in-depth. After researching into various products and techniques I used the proposal to help finalise the main idea. In my proposal, I discuss effectively how I will go about creating a mood.  It is important to create a proposal for professional standards as they are used all over the media industry and are used to portray a developed idea.

I met up with the crew to finish talking about the Memento Morr – Script and finish it and start to create formal shot lists and create a vision for how the narrative will look visually. After the script was completed an audition script was created to be used at the auditions. After this meeting the next week as a crew we arranged to meet up with the actors after they had read the Audition Script.

I then created a Call Sheet to be used on location with a basic schedule, this document will be useful on location for getting in contact with the actors and for being organised on the shoot. It is important to use a call sheet on a professional production to manage time correctly, this helped with some basic timings and then the actors were shown the main schedule as shown below.

Screenshot 2019-05-08 at 09.56.07.png

I then created an Equipment list to be used to book out equipment, as well as to ensure that equipment isn’t lost or misplaced on the shoot. This is important on a professional production to ensure the correct equipment is booked out to film and it could ruin a filming day if the wrong equipment is taken out.

I created some of the pre-production documents necessary for the creation of the fictional as part of a crew. I created H&S first, I created it first in case of any potential hazards that may have occurred which is important when a whole crew would be filming on a bigger project as they need to know what precautions to take before going on a recce. After setting up the risk assessment to be filled in further by the level of the risks, I then gave the risk assessment to another crew member to be filled out on location. Completed with levels of risks is shown in the picture below.

I used a storyboard to help me visualise and gain an order of how the narrative would go to come up with ideas for shots and colour in the ideas generation section. I took the Storyboard Beach Scene created and then created annotations to develop a further structure of how the shots would go. The Screenshot Annotations were useful to make a reference to when editing to make the process more effective and quick. As well as giving a baseline. I can improve further upon my storyboarding in the future by adding more visual and written detail. It needs to be more in-depth and correctly formatted. I didn’t create the storyboard although it was useful for ideas generation however in the future on a fiction project I will create a more in-depth and useful storyboard to make the edit go faster and have a natural visual narrative on paper to follow rather than just the script. Shot list 1Shot list 2Shotlist 3 I created a shot list/order to be used in Whitby and for visualisation of how the piece would look. I did this because it will make the post-production stage go faster as well as making sure that on location shots aren’t missed and un-filmed it was also useful for helping to come up with ideas as to how the piece will look and give an outline as to how the edit will go. I create a shot list/order together because it will be more effective to film and be more time efficient. I also added in some ideas for framing/ unconventional framing suggestions, which I did to help with framing on location, however, these could have been more in-depth and put towards specific framing such as bottom right corner framed.

Process evaluation

Throughout, this production, I started off by defining the idea through the use of a proposal, which I have done to ensure I know actually what I am going to be creating and potential issues involved. I also used the proposal to further develop the idea, as to what will be required, the deadlines and the ideas for how the narrative will go. Before creating the pre-production documents I did for this piece, I throughout about what needed to be done, by who and what else was required resources while. After considering what would be needed such as equipment and a way of portraying the narrative to an actor, I then created the necessary production documents for the project, I assisted with the creation of a script and audition script to be used to audition cast and to create a shot list from. I then created a call sheet and started the process of a health and safety sheet but didn’t get it to be filled out until on location as to get precise levels of risk filling them out on location was necessary.  I created an equipment list to ensure the correct equipment was booked out and not the wrong equipment. A schedule was created for the shooting and filming of the production, however, a more effective schedule would have been one that includes, editing, planning, ect. In the future, I plan on using a more in-depth schedule such as this as it is important in a professional production, specifically a paid one to back up when processes will happen to increase time management effectiveness, as well as to prove where work has happened to ensure the correct payment is paid. I used a shot list and storyboard in conjunction to develop the narrative of the piece and create a visual representation of how the shooting needs to commence to create a finished product. Throughout this production the documents I have used have assisted the processes, however I haven’t used all of the documents I could have done such as a break down sheet which has affected the production by leaving certain problems unlooked, this later in the production meant that time management was a little lacking because problems that hadn’t been looked into and broken down were an issue. By using a breakdown sheet it would have further improved the structure of the project and ensured that goal was achieved on time and not pushed back.

Rough Suggestions/Questions Asked and Client responseMinutes Meeting 1Shot listMethodist Church Hall RecceHealth and SafetySchedule

I created rough suggestions/ questions asked document to talk to the client about and ask the necessary questions, for my purposes it worked however in the future I will create a more formal and in-depth sheet to talk to a client about and show that can be understood easily and that will be to more of a professional standard expected.

I created a minutes meeting because it’s important to professionally have they key points from a meeting with the client as a videographer to make sure things aren’t misunderstood and are useful for going through ideas one key point at a time in the visualisation process. I created a schedule to get down filming dates available after speaking with the client, it’s important to create a schedule in a professional production to back up fees in a budget as well as keeping to deadlines of getting footage on the set date. I didn’t create a schedule for editing time as well as other things that changed as it seemed like it would have been not time effective, however in a professional paid production it would be necessary to make sure payment is made for all work done not just seen work such as filming but everything it takes to make a video through all stages. I created a shot-list to visualise and have something to remember the shots to get, this is useful to do in a professional production as well because it assists the communication of shots to get to other crew members. I didn’t use a log sheet because I was on my own although had it been a different event/had the crew been more than one it could have been done which would have made the editing sequence more effective. Although it still wasn’t much of a problem as soon as I had filmed an event I ordered/evaluated clips(Putting useable footage into key folders) and preset times for the clips to start and stop. I did this to make the final editing process faster and more effective and because it is something that is done in professional production and is necessary for the editor to have.

Shot listElim Church Recce

I did a recce of the location and then added to the H&S I had already done for the previous location them being the same. This was useful because it allowed me to come up with potential problems as well as evaluate the location for risks. I then created a shot-list to visualise and have something to remember the shots to get, this is useful to do in a professional production as well because it assists the communication of shots to get to other crew members. I got verbal permission to film the people at the events, I did this because it’s important to get permission to film, however I didn’t get anyone to sign a release form, this worked for what it was as the people were fine with being filmed although in a professional production it would be necessary to get these forms because people may change their mind and not want to be filmed and it could cause a lot of problems in post-production. especially in a professional production with money involved and the client expecting a product which could be derailed by people changing their mind about being in the video.

Shot listBriefVisualisationMinutes MeetingCreative Response / Research

After creating the brief, I created a written visualisation of how the introduction to Mosborough corps would go. I met with the client and the communications officer(CO) from Salvation Army HQ Leeds and showed them a rough edit of footage I had from two events a coffee morning and a harvest festival meal. Whilst showing the edit I paused and talked about why I used the shots and asked about possible titles after showing them various matte tracks. I did this to make sure the client was happy with how the video would end up looking and it wouldn’t get to the video being finished and the client not wanting it which is important in a professional paid production as it could mean not getting paid if the videographer didn’t ask and make sure with the client throughout what exactly it was they wanted. I also talked to the client through a written visualisation of how the video would go as well as referencing them to my creative response to the brief after showing it to them and making sure I had all the information and so that I wouldn’t end up creating a video the client wouldn’t want. This involved showing the client some videos that had been done in the past for the salvation army as well as one done for a Methodist church that I thought the overall theme would best fit what the client wanted the video to promote a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Its important in a professional production to do this as it could mean not getting paid if the video provided isn’t what the client said they wanted.

Pre-production

Shot listCommunity centre – MosboroughHealth and SafetyMinutes meeting

I didn’t create a storyboard and instead talked to the client and described shots and how the video would end up going its narrative through the use of a descriptive shot list, this worked for me being on my own. However in the future, it is to a more professional standard to use a storyboard to visualise a video, I will also use a storyboard in the future because not having one made it more difficult to visualise and communicate the video. I created a recce and H&S which wasn’t all that useful for me in this case although in a professional production of more than one person it would be.

Process/ evaluation

During the processes of the production for the client video, I started off by talking to the client to be able to define the idea, I then spoke to the client to get confirmation on what specifically was required and created a brief/proposal. I arranged meetings throughout this unit and used minutes meetings to keep track of key points when talking to the client. This went well although I could do with creating more regular and in-depth minute meetings in the future when talking to a client. I created a recce and health and safety in an unusual order, it worked for me but on a professional production it would make more sense to do a recce and then health and safety after being on location. I created a shot-list however I did not create any storyboards this affected the project in two ways it made the edit more difficult and time-consuming and took me a little longer to visualise in the future I plan on using storyboards more to visualise better. Throughout the process of creating the pre-production documents I throughout about what was needed, such as equipment and crew although I didn’t create the documents for such things because I was working alone, however if I were working in a crew I would create these documents however not creating them in this case didn’t really affect the finished video. I could have thought more and asked my self questions about who, what and when certain resources would be needed however I didn’t not doing this only really affected the project in one way I didn’t break down what was going to happen not doing this made the project a little unorganised. I did create a schedule however only for filming days, this made the process of editing and delivering a little more difficult than it had to be, in the future I will create a more in-depth schedule planning out when I will do document, film, edit and deliver the video. Overall not creating all the documents for this project at points affected the project negatively although because I was working on my own it mostly didn’t however in the future when working on a project in a crew I will create these documents. I asked for permission but didn’t create permission sheets, this hasn’t affected the project that much although in a professional paid production it is necessary to create proof of permission to use footage, otherwise it could mean a video can’t be delivered because someone may change their mind and there would be no proof of their permission.

Through the process of delivery it went reasonably well after speaking to the digital team about delivering the video, however in the future the only thing that could be improved upon is to ahead of time ask about what format is needed so that time isn’t wasted trying to figure out the correct format when delivering the video. I have achieved my footage of the client video, I have done this should the client want some footage at a later date. It’s a good idea to do this as it can mean getting paid for purely delivering footage if a client wants it years after the original video is realised. Overall, the order of the processes of my production management worked for this project, although in the future I will use a more logical format in which to create production documents.

Studio Binder – Colour and cinematography. – Specifically, I looked into Vaiurs sources on colour and cinematography, from this I then did various documents on Ideas for shots and techniques above. Specifically, I researched into Ideas for shots and annotated shots to assist in the generation of the ideas and the shotlist and storyboard. The research I have done in this portfolio will assist in the creation of the short film and assist it to be to a more professional and experimental level. I researched into various projects and did research on Colour, Framing and other techniques to use. I gained inspiration to contribute to the project. Such as ideas for shots to be used in beach and town scenes as well as for lighting and colour grading to be used in some of the inside candle scenes.

Throughout the process of creating the initial idea to be finalised in the proposal, as a creww we set up some scene narratives and shots in the form of mindmaps, this went well and helped to further develop the vision for the frictional piece. I also added in some meanings towards the props for the initial ideas although nothing concrete because its open to interpretation. I also created a make rough shotlist for the first beach scene as shown below.

Research into specifically avant-garde short films and horror thrillers.

I looked into similar projects of thriller and talked about them with the crew as for ideas for the dark figure and how it might look as well as potential ideas for the narrative of the film and how it might look. I also researched more specifically into two avant-grade – experimental short films.

I liked the way this short film generated a theme/mood throughout without using a charter through the use of cinematography and sound. I have gained some inspiration from this and plan on using some of the techniques used in this short film in my fictional piece such as carefully framed shots to infer meaning and create a mood in the audience.

I liked the way this film showed the time running out till death which sort of has the same theme I am going for in my fictional project, I have also gained some inspiration from the use of darkness around the character for the scenes on the beach to show the character slowly losing hope and the darkness enveloping the character.
